John G. Robertson

PictureProgram cover for the 1983 Royal Queensland Show ("the Ekka"): John riding Glenormiston Domo Cavallo Praize.

John is a trainer and competitor with over forty years experience in Eventing, Show Jumping and Dressage at the highest levels.  A native of Queensland, Australia, John brings a wealth of international experience to his role as Trainer at Tayside Sport Horses. He has competed in Eventing to Advanced level, and competed to Grand Prix level in Dressage and Show Jumping. John is currently training horses and riders to Advanced levels in the US, and still actively competes himself.
In the 1970's, John was fortunate to train and compete in the UK with Olympian Barbara Hammond, one of the few riders to compete at international level in all three major equestrian disciplines.  Barbara competed in the Eventing European Championships, the Eventing World Championships in 1974, the Dressage World Championships at Goodwood in 1978, and the 1988 Seoul Olympics in Dressage.
During that period, John also trained foxhunters and rode to hounds with the Heythrop Hunt, coached a member of the UK’s Junior Dressage Team, and trained with a master of the Spanish Riding School in dressage to Grand Prix level.

In Australia during the 1980s, John was privileged to be the main rider for Domo Cavallo Praize, a much beloved Connemara stallion owned by Susan and Barton Clarke of Glenormiston Connemaras.  He developed a love for Connemaras that endures to this day, and is on the International Panel of Classifiers for the breed.

John also has extensive experience as a show judge, course designer, equitation coach, and clinician for dressage, show jumping, and cross country.  Back in Australia, he held certification as an Instructor/Examiner for the Pony Club Association of Queensland, was a member of the PCAQ State Eventing squad, held National Coaching Accreditation Scheme certification, and
bred and trained thoroughbred racehorses.
He enjoys working with riders of any age who are committed to improving their skills in dressage, jumping and cross country riding.  John has a positive, constructive style of instruction, with a keen regard for rider safety and animal welfare.  He has helped many former racehorses find a new career, and is always willing to help with a problem or project horse.
